St Barbara Cathedral, Kutna Hora, Czech Republic. Sights and Places of Interest of Czech Republic (Czechia).
St Barbara’s Cathedral –
Kutna Hora,
Work on St Barbara’s dates back as far as the late 1300’s and was originally funded by the wealthy mine owners of Kutna Hora. Part of the reason for the construction is said to be an attempt to emulate St. Vitus Cathedral which can be found within the boundaries of
Prague
Castle . Blighted by numerous financial set backs, it was not until 1905 that St Barbara’s was finally completed. Owing to the length of time it took for completion of the cathedral, the different ages and techniques are reflected in the final building today and many images and references can be found to its origins of mining.
St Barbara is the Patron Saint of Mining and St Barbara’s Cathedral is reputed to be the best example of a Gothic Cathedral in the
Czech
Republic.
