Kemer, Antalya Province, Turkey

A resort on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey , Kemer is situated on the gulf of Antalya and offers 53km of coastline.  The Taurus Mountains are standing, with their lowland areas behind the town. This popular tourist destination enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, helping to contribute to popularity with visitors from abroad.

A quiet rural area until the beginning of the 1980’s, Kemer was originally called Eski Koy ( Old Village).  In 1916/1917 a huge 23km stone wall was constructed to divert the mountain waters away from the town and rid them of their regular flooding problems.  The name Kemer is a reference to the protective walls. It was not until the 1960’s that a road was laid to reach Kemer, prior to that access was strictly by boat only. From the 1980’s massive investment in infrastructure was poured into the area, recognising the tourism potential in the stunning unspoilt beauty, mountains with pine forests and untouched beaches.
