Russia (Russian Federation), is the biggest country in the world by land mass area, occupying 17 million 75 thousand 400 sq.km, about 11,5% of the land surface area of our planet. The population of Russia is 142 million (2008), with mostly Russian residents (80%). Official language is the Russian language. The capital and the largest city is Moscow. Other major cities are Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Nizhniy Novgorod, Samara, Chelyabinsk, Omsk.
The currency of the country is the Russian Ruble (RUB).
The first organized Russian state was the Kiev Russ (Kievskaya Russ, years 862 to 1242).Today Russia is a Presidential Republic Federal State and in international affair matters Russia is the country heritor of USSR. Russian Federation consists of 83 federal components. (Federal republics, territories, districts, oblasts, towns, regions.)
After a period of destabilization in the economy 1990-2000, today Russia is a country with a rapid growing economy, one of the eight largest economies of the world.
