Qutub Complex – A variety of buildings and monuments. Contained within the area, stands the famous Qutub Minar, whose construction started in 1199.  It is a brick built minaret constructed of red sandstone and marble and stands proudly at 72.5 metres high.  Although its original purpose is unknown and remains a subject for discussion, it is said to be amongst the finest structures ever built in India, decorated with detailed carvings and extracts from the Koran. Internally the pillar has a total of 399 steps leading up to the top.  Additionally, the Ashoka Pillar also stands on this site; this pillar dates from the 5^th century and is constructed from iron. Legend says that if you stand with your back to the pillar and hold your hands around the girth, a wish will be granted.  Unfortunately, these days the pillar is protected by a railing, so visitors are unable to test this theory out! The whole site was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993.
