Qutub Minar, Delhi, India. Sights and Places of Interest of Delhi, India.
Qutub Complex – A variety of buildings and monuments. Contained within the area, stands the famous Qutub Minar, whose construction started in 1199. It is a brick built minaret constructed of red sandstone and marble and stands proudly at 72.5 metres high. Although its original purpose is unknown and remains a subject for discussion, it is said to be amongst the finest structures ever built in India, decorated with detailed carvings and extracts from the Koran. Internally the pillar has a total of 399 steps leading up to the top. Additionally, the Ashoka Pillar also stands on this site; this pillar dates from the 5th century and is constructed from iron. Legend says that if you stand with your back to the pillar and hold your hands around the girth, a wish will be granted. Unfortunately, these days the pillar is protected by a railing, so visitors are unable to test this theory out! The whole site was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993.
