Widely acclaimed as one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century, Pope John Paul II is credited with amongst a host of many other achievements, assisting with the ending of communism in
Eastern Europe . He also placed significant importance on extending a hand of friendship to other religions and faiths including Judaism, the Anglican churches and Eastern Orthodox Church. During his time as Pope, he had the opportunity to visit 129 countries, and was very often able to communicate in native tongue as he was fluent in 10 languages.
Pope John Paul II held the second longest term of office as pope. His papacy began on 16th October 1978 until his passing on 2nd April 2005. He was born on 18th May 1920 in
Wadowice, and to date has been the only Polish pope.
