Poltava Battle, Russian Soldiers Common Grave, Poltava, Ukraine. The battle of Poltava is the most famous battle of the Great Northern War. More than 25000 men besieged the town of Poltava. The battle of 1709 was the victory of Peter I of Russia who defeated Charles XII of Sweden. This memorial ground was formed to commemorate those who fought to honour their country.
