Interesting Facts:
The Spanish Raid of 1595 was responsible for the destruction of Newlyn, along with Penzance, Paul and Mousehole.
The Mayflower is believed to have taken water onboard at Newlyn in 1620, being the last port of call before embarking on her famous transatlantic voyage.
1755 witnessed the disastrous effects of a tsunami following the Lisbon earthquake. The sea water rose some ten feet in just ten minutes, however ebbed again at the same rate. The natural phenomenon left in its wake a trial of devastation.
Newlyn has long had a strong association with creative arts and today many galleries are to be found and enjoyed. Troika Pottery was based in Newlyn between 1970 and 1983 prior to its closure.
