Choirokitia Neolithic Settlement History – Part Four:
At some stage the Choirokitia settlement outgrew its initial boundaries and started to spread and enlarge to the west, in areas that had not been inhabited up to that time. The new areas accordingly, were surrounded for protection by a new strong wall, the line signs of it have been located extending in length to more than 60 metres.
The entrance to the settlement was a complex and complicated architectural design, carried out in such a way as to deal with the big hypsometric (height from sea level) difference between the outside and inside of the protecting wall areas and levels of the ground. This entrancing method is unique not only in the whole of , but in the whole of the
Middle East . This included many elements targeting the control of who was entering into the settlement. The main part of this complex is extended along the outside face of the protecting wall of the village, a compact stone volume carefully built and plastered, inside of which were constructed some stairs.
The archaeological excavations of this complex are still not completed. The archaeologists expect to discover more evidence of the way this complex was built, methods they may have used and more clues as to the day-to-day life of the settlement inhabitants.
