Life has not always been so idyllic; together with Newlyn, Penzance and Paul, Mousehole was all but destroyed in 1595 during the raid on Mounts Bay by the Spaniard Carlos de Amesquita. The only building that survived was Keigwin Arms, a local pub, which is now a residence. A plaque commemorates this dark chapter in the history of Mousehole, with a tribute to Squire Jenkyn Keigwin who was killed on 23rd July 1595 defending the house against the Spaniards.
