Loreta, Prague, Czech Republic. Sample of Baroque Architecture in Czechia. Sights and Places of Interest in Prague (Praha) Area, Czech Republic.
Loreta, is a close replica of the Holy House in
Loreto, Italy. The original building in Italy, sources suggest, was the house of the Virgin Mary of Nazareth that was carried to Italy by the angels fleeing from the pagans in
Nazareth .
The Loretan Chapel within the courtyard was commissioned by the aristocratic Lubkowitz family in 1626 and built by the Italian architect Giovanni Battista Orsi.
The Loretan Treasury houses the Diamond Monstrance “
Prague Sun”, which was given as a gift from the Countess Ludmila of Kolowrat in her will. The Countess received 6000 diamonds as a wedding gift from her third husband and she instructed that a Monstrance should be made of these diamonds upon her death; therefore in 1699 the Monstrance was completed.
Loreta today is an important pilgrimage site and is cared for by Capuchins (Franciscan friars) from a neighbouring monastery. If you time your visit right, you may get the chance to hear the 27 bell carillon on the clock tower which plays a melody on the hour.
