Pamukkale meaning “cotton castle” in Turkish, is located in south west Turkey, in the
Denizli
Province . This natural phenomenon is located in Turkey’s inner Aegean region, in the
River
Menderes
Valley and draws large numbers of visitors and tourists alike.
This unusual landscape is as a result of tectonic movement and numerous earthquakes. Hot springs pushed their way up to the surface and the large mineral count, in particular chalk, was ultimately responsible for the formation of this fascinating scene. The resulting effect today is now a dense white limestone and travertine layer.
A World Heritage Site since 1988, together with the ancient city of Hierapolis that was constructed on top of the "white castle”. The area of Pamukkale is 2700 metres in length and 160 metres in height.
