Kelin monument, Poltava, Ukraine.
Kelin monument, Poltava, Ukraine. Colonel Kelin fought in many battles of the Great Northern War and was an active leader defending the fortress. This monument was erected to honour his bravery and leadership of his defendants. Promoted eventually to major general in 1710 the statue rests at one of the bastions of the fortress and was designed by architect and historian Baron Bildering. The design features a large reclining lion, the defender of the monument, representing Kelins military position. The inscription states, "To the valorous commandant of Poltava Colonel Kelin and glorious defenders of the city in 1709”.
