Kamasutra scenes, Khajuraho Temple, India

This group of ancient monuments are situated in Khajuraho village, 385 miles south east of Delhi in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The site is an extremely popular place of interest for tourists and can boast status as amongst the most visited by visitors to India. In 1986 UNESCO listed the site as a World Heritage Site.

The temples were constructed between 950 and 1050 during the Chandella dynasty.  A wall was constructed around the temple site guarded by eight gates; at each gate a golden palm tree stood proudly either side. Khajuraho totalled in excess of Hindu 80 temples, however today only 25 remain but fortunately these are in reasonable order. The site covers many square miles and visitors now find a parked landscape to explore and enjoy.

The site is well known for the erotic sculpture, however, no sexual or erotic material is to be found inside the temples or anywhere near to the deities. The purpose of the images is to portray that you are required to leave any desires of that nature at the entrance to the temple.

A sound and light show is performed each evening on the open lawn area. The duration is approximately one hour and the first show is in English with the second being in Hindi.
