Holy Trinity Church, Bansko, Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria.
Situated in the centre of the village, the Holy Trinity Church was constructed on land donated by grandfather Lazko. Work to construct the church was started in 1810 and the then Turkish laws that ruled the land stated that a church could not be bigger than a mosque. Clever thinking resulted in the symbol of the half moon and star being represented in the stone over the central entrance in addition to that of the traditional cross. In this way the locals were able to justify that this was a building connected to the ruling powers at the time.
Extension works were carried out in 1835 with approximately 350 workmen involved in the programme. This included stonemason, carvers, labourers and volunteers that worked tirelessly even through the night. It was during these nocturnal workings that legend says that the church was extended out bit by bit – night by night under the very noses of the ruling Turks without them realising what was going on.
The impressive tower stands 30 metres in height and work started years later in 1850 and again was financed by local generosity.
The Holy Trinity Church is 44 metres in length, 22 metres in width and 12 metres in height. The massive load of the roof is supported by 12 columns of fir in representation of Christ’s 12 martyrs.
