Orissa lies on the east coast of India close to the
Bay of Bengal . It is the 9th largest state in India by actual area and 11th by population. The capital
Bhubaneswar has somewhere in the region of 1000 temples.
The Hirakud Dam is also located in Orissa and is reputed to be one of the longest earthen dams in the world measuring 26km. The dam spans the
Mahanadi
River and was constructed in 1956. The dam regulates the flow of the
Mahanadi
River and by such doing, produces hydroelectricity.
