Choirokoitia Settlement, Site area View, Cyprus.
Choirokitia Neolithic Settlement History – Part Three:
On the higher areas of the hill can be seen ruins of the building structure XLV with walls of 210cm thickness and consisting of 3 concentric stone walls.
In two building structures XVII and XVIII, situated outside of the settlement protecting wall, have been discovered three of the richest tombs of the entire settlement. The tradition in Choirokitia was to bury the dead in a pit, located in the residential areas where the residents were still continuing to live before and after the internment of the body. In these graves were placed one or two stone vessels which were broken during the burial procedure. Two graves in the above mentioned location were found with a necklace around the neck made of cockles, other shells and pieces of ornamentation.
No other instances apart from those mentioned above have occurred of a burial having been found to have any other items apart from the body and broken pots in the grave.
The corpses would have been covered by a huge stone, as can be seen in a reconstruction of such a grave exposed in Larnaca’s archaeological museum.
