Cambodia, Simple Map 1
Map of Cambodia
Cambodia offers the visitor a rich, diverse variety of places of interest and things to do, here are just a few that are amongst the most popular tourist attractions in this area:
Phnom Penh - Is the largest city and the capital of Cambodia
. It was referred to as “The Pearl of Asia” in the 1920’s and to this day is a significant global tourist destination. The city is home to in excess of 1,000,000 people with the total population for the country standing at approximately 13,000,000. Some of the main attractions are the
Royal
Palace with the Silver Pagoda dating back to the mid 1800’s and the
National
Museum constructed during the French colonial era in the late 1800’s. The oldest construction is Wat Phnom, a pagoda standing 27 metres in height, which was constructed in 1373.
Sambor Prei Kuk - This important site consists of over 100 predominantly brick built temples located in a shady, tranquil forest setting. It is said to be Cambodia’s most impressive collection of pre-Angkorian monuments.
Bokor Hill Station - Located just outside the town of Kampot in southern Cambodia is the abandoned French built town sitting on top of
Bokor
Mountain . The town dates back to 1922 and was built by the French to escape the heat of
Phnom Penh . The complex included shops, royal apartments, church, hotel, casino and even a post office. This location has been the choice of numerous film directors and the 2002 film “City of
Ghosts ” starring Matt Dillon was filmed there. Although now uninhabited, it was announced in January 2008 that this important piece of history would now undergo re-development.
Tonle Sap Floating Village - Tonle Sap is the largest fresh water lake in south east Asia and has both a lake and river system. The waters are unusual for a variety of reasons including the fact that the flow changes direction twice a year. Along the waters edge floating villages are found with everyday life carrying on as usual. Boat trips are available to tour these villages offering fantastic photo opportunities.
Mondulkiri - Located in eastern Cambodia, Mondulkiri is the least populated area in the whole country. This stunning scenery of national parks, waterfalls and forests can only be enhanced by the opportunity to ride on an elephant through the lush vegetation, guided by an experienced mahout.
Battambang - This riverside urbanisation is the second largest city in Cambodia and boasts some of the best preserved architecture dating back to colonial times. The town was founded in the 11th century and is well worth a visit.
