Aspendos Greek - Roman Amphitheatre, Antalya, Turkey. Greek Sights and Places of Interest in Antalya, Turkey.
Aspendos Amphitheatre,
Antalya, Turkey
The ancient city of
Aspendos is believed to have been founded, as far back as 1000 BC by the Greeks. Coins from the 5th Century BC have been found from Aspendos, which are some of the earliest to have ever been uncovered. Very often the coins had images of a Triskelion, consisting of three protrusions emanating from a central point, placed in rotational symmetry. For example, the three legs on the flag of the Isle of Man.
The amphitheatre was constructed in the 2nd century AD and lies 44km east of
Antalya . Offering seating for many thousands of eager spectators, this magnificent structure was the work of the Greek architect Zenon; it was dedicated to Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
At certain periods in the history of this particular amphitheatre, it was used as a resting place for travellers and merchants from North Africa, Asia and South
Eastern Europe . Also known as a Caravanserai, the Suljuks carried out repairs and utilised it as a stop off and shelter for people and animals alike. Stalls offering food and other items were set inside the amphitheatre, together with food for animals. The amphitheatre's own stall holders were also able to stock up from the visiting merchants.
Today visitors and locals enjoy performances of opera and ballet, throughout the summer months of June and July, in this ancient monument.
