Constructed in 1226 by Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat, the 5 dock shipyard is entered at the rear of the red tower. The red tower was also completed in 1226 by the Sultan and the tower's principal function at that time, was to defend the shipyard. After finally conquering Alanya, the Sultan wanted to be sure that his shipyard would be defended.
The shipyard and red tower are today one of Alanya’s most popular tourist attractions and are a definite on anyone’s “must see” list. The red tower is synonymous with Alanya and is a symbol of the city, depicted on the city seal. Exhibitions are frequently housed in the lower levels of the red tower.
